Saya is the Japanese term for a scabbard, specifically for a sword or knife. Saya – Knife Covers protect your blade and keep the cutting edge from getting dulled when not in use. They also help avoid accidental injury. A must have for any cook that transports their knives.
My Saya – Knife Covers are handcrafted from Poplar wood with two finish options; wax or oil finish. I also offer the full custom option where you can choose a specific type of wood.
I get your knife back to my studio and begin measuring and marking out your knife. Using chisels and knives I carve out the housing for the blade. After checking the fit I laminate a matching face piece to enclose the case. After shaping with various hand tools the result is a custom fit saya that contours around the handle of your knife.
At this time only Japanese and Western style knives with half-bolster handles are able to be fitted with a saya – knife cover. Knives with a full safety-bolster (Sabatier, Wusthof, Henckels) are unable to be fitted with this style of saya – knife cover.
*All Saya – Knife Covers are made to order. Allow 1-2 weeks for completion.
*While it is possible to make a saya from a tracing of a knife, the result is much better when made from the blade itself.
